In the movie, Maui recounts his victories and adventures through his moving tattoos (interestingly, 'tattoo' is a loanword of Samoan origin) and the lyrics of 'You’re Welcome.' Much of Moana is the result of Disney combining aspects of different Polynesian cultures, and The Rock’s character is no exception. (Who yesterday won the Tony Award for Best Score of a Musical.) With all that talent onboard, Moana seems more than ready to set sail. Moana is taught wayfinding by Maui, the Polynesian demigod. Moana is being directed as the first primarily computer-animated film from Ron Clements and John Musker, the duo previously responsible for The Little Mermaid and Hercules. Auli'i Cravalho will be voicing Moana, and the film's musical score includes tracks from Opetaia Foaʻi and Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda. But Moana, the film's main character, is unimpressed. As Johnson explains, Maui used his magical fish-hook to slow down the Sun and pull up islands from the ocean's floor. It tells the story of a Polynesian princess, who must seek out Maui, a legendary demigod, to help her reunite a mystical relic with a goddess in order to save her people. Maui is a legendary figure in many cultures in the Pacific, sharing characteristics with heroes from Greek mythology like Hercules and Prometheus. Disney’s latest animated feature film, Moana, has achieved critical acclaim, already netting over half a billion dollars. The clip begins with demigod Maui (voiced by Dwayne Johnson), introducing himself and his exploits. Disney has dropped the first teaser trailer for Moana, its animated feature set in the South Pacific, and it seems the company has another hit on its hands.
